Have you ever gone to bed thinking about a problem, a decision, or a question in your life—and then had a dream that seemed connected to it?
Dream incubation is the practice of intentionally bringing a question, concern, or topic into your dream space before you go to sleep.
Instead of simply waiting to see what you dream about, you give your dreaming mind something specific to explore.
How Does Dream Incubation Work?
Dream incubation begins with intention.
Before going to sleep, you choose something you would like to explore. It might be a question you’ve been struggling with, a situation you want more clarity about, an aspect of yourself you want to understand, or even a recurring pattern in your life.
Your question might be something like:
What am I overlooking in this situation?
What do I need to understand about this relationship?
What is keeping me from moving forward?
What part of myself needs more attention?
What can I learn about this recurring dream?
Then you take that question with you into sleep.
The dream that follows may not give you a literal answer. Dreams often communicate through imagery, emotions, people, places, memories, and symbols. Sometimes the connection is obvious. Other times, you may need to explore the dream and ask yourself how its different elements relate to your waking life.
And sometimes the answer may unfold through more than one dream.
Dream Incubation Is More Than Asking a Question
One of the most important parts of dream incubation happens after you wake up.
Write down as much of the dream as you can remember before you begin your day. Pay attention not only to what happened but also to how you felt, what stood out, and what associations you have with the people, objects, and places that appeared.
Then return to the question you asked before going to sleep.
How might this dream be responding to it?
You don't have to force an interpretation. Sometimes simply recording the dream and sitting with it allows connections to emerge that you didn't notice at first.
Over time, dream incubation can become a way to intentionally explore your inner world rather than simply waiting for dreams to happen.
Introducing Dream Conversations
Introducing Dream Conversations
This is exactly why I created Dream Conversations: A Dream Incubation Journal.
Dream Conversations is a guided journal designed to help you move beyond simply recording your dreams and begin intentionally exploring the questions that matter to you through your dreams.
The journal walks you through the process step by step, from choosing a question and preparing for dream incubation to remembering, recording, and exploring the dreams that follow.
It also includes guided questions, examples, and 30 dream incubation entries you can complete at your own pace. You can use the journal for a single question, return to it whenever something comes up in your life, or work through all 30 entries as an ongoing dream practice.
You don't need to be an experienced dream interpreter. You simply need curiosity, a journal, and a willingness to pay attention to what your dreams bring forward.
Dream Conversations is available beginning October 1, 2026 at Amazon
If you've ever wished you could ask your dreams a question instead of simply waiting to see what happens when you fall asleep, this journal was created for you.
Start a conversation with your dreams.
